High Arches

Cavus foot or high arch is a condition in which the foot has a very high arch.  Due to arch height an excessive amount of weight is placed through the heel and ball of the foot often causing pain.

High arched feet and flat feet are often genetic and passed down through families.  There are some conditions however that can cause progressive high arched feet to develop; often these are neurological in origin.

For the most a high arch is normal for them, however in some cases can cause issues if the patient is very active.

The high arched foot is a poor shock absorber often not pronating enough to reduce the shock during gait.  Due to this pain is often felt in the foot, ankles, shins and knees and sometimes the lower back.

Common conditions experienced are plantar fasciitis and metatarsalgia, shin splints, knee and back pain.

Treatments

The cavus foot requires shock absorption and we advise that patients stay with well fitting, cushioning shoes with rubber soles to help relieve pain.

If the shoes themselves are not sufficient to reduce pain levels then we can prescribe orthotics.

Orthotics work very well to redistribute the pressure around the whole foot and not just the heel and ball of the foot, this helps to reduce pain and shock throughout the foot and are often very successful.
