Children’s Feet

Children’s feet differ from those of adults, as they are not yet fully formed.

Babies feet are mostly cartilage and don’t fully form to bone until about the age of three years. Children’s feet are soft and pliable making them prone to damage from abnormal pressure such as ill fitting footwear.

Some children walk with their feet pointed inwards or outwards and in most cases this is within the normal range for there developmental stage. In some cases these walking styles do not change and can cause problems such as leg soreness, tripping and falling. If you have any concerns it is advisable to bring your child in for evaluation.

Arch development is individual and stabilizes around the age of 6-8 years, arch height does not always indicate future foot problems.

Some children do develop leg soreness/aching especially at night this can often signify bio-mechanical issues such as flat feet, knock knees or other issues. Aching legs can also occur in older children, particularly boys at around 13 years of age and can often be growing pains.

In some cases children need orthoses to help correct bio-mechanical problems with their feet, this helps in most cases to prevent further damage to their feet and reduce lower leg injuries especially if they participate in a lot of sport.

If you have any queries or concerns please don’t hesitate to make an appointment with either Susan or Joshua for an assessment.
