Children’s Orthoses

Children’s feet are still forming and  are quite fragile.  They can be damaged easily by shoes and socks that are too small.  Early examination of children’s feet is a preventative measure.  Uneven shoe wear; skin rashes, lumps or bumps on the feet; pain in the feet or legs; frequent tripping and falling are signs of potential problems.

Sporting activity – walking, running, jumping – places greater physical demands on the body than normal day-to-day activities.  While running, your feet can absorb up to 3 times your body weight.  Not surprisingly, injuries to the foot and lower limb make up a large proportion of sporting injuries.  Podiatrists understand the structure and movement of the foot; therefore, they can diagnose foot conditions, recommend appropriate footwear and training regimens.

Usually podiatrists do not issue orthoses for children under the age of 5 years due to developmental changes still occurring in their feet, however actually the foot is not fully finished forming until the age of 8.

Some foot conditions cannot be properly identified until the adult foot has fully formed.

I usually issue children’s orthoses under the this age only if there is due concern.

At Rightstep we have a range of inserts from over the counter devices, little tots supports and custom made devices.

If you are concerned about your child, tripping, falling, walking, in-toeing or complains of pain please do not hesitate to attend for an appointment.  In most cases change of footwear and minor treatments are all that is required.
